Location: Rijnmond-Drechtsteden, The Netherlands
Status: Research by design study that explores the spatial effects and opportunities related to four alternative regional flood risk protection strategies for the Dutch Rijnmond Region.
Client: Rotterdam Climate Initiative
Collaboration: Delft University of Technology, HKV lijn in water, Port of Rotterdam.
As one of the projects connected to the National Delta Program, Defacto has analyzed and mapped out the effects of the predicted rising water levels in the unembarked areas the Rijnmond-Drechtsteden region. These elevated areas are known for their increased vulnerability to floods. We tested wether the placement of large storm surges allow for a decrease of the average height of the surrounding levees and if these surges have positive effect on the level on regional safety.
