It is well understood that the flood risk in The Netherlands will increase. The S-house is a design for a dikehouse in a floodrisk area near the town of Deventer and provides a solution to the increased flood risk. It consists of S-shaped parts with a topfloor that is pointed towards the dike and a lower floor that is pointed towards the floodplains. Day-to-day use of the house will adapt to seasonal characteristics. In wintertime, with high water levels, all functions are concentrated on the upper floor; the water rises up to the parapet. In summertime, with low water levels, the lower level provides comfortable living spaces at floodplain level.
