Location: Muiden, The Netherlands
Status: Design study for reuse pump station
Client: Stadsherstel Amsterdam N.V.

The historic Muiden pumping station, built in 1892, was replaced by a modern electric pumping station. Defacto studied the possibilities for reuse of the building as an artists’ studio. The result is a design in which characteristic elements of the building, such as the pump, the house-like exterior and windows with beautiful lighting are saved. By opening up the roof at two locations, the exterior of the building remains virtually untouched, while on the inside an entirely new space and lighting setup is created. The studio is complemented by a flower garden in which the resident artist can exhibit his or her works.
